Transducers

Transducers can be mounted in a number of different locations on the boat. The shape of the boat's hull, hull material and placement of its engines have to be taken into account when choosing a transducer type that will deliver optimal performance for the vessel.

Transom Mount: For displacement or planing hulls with single or twin in-board or outboard engines. Simple to install and ideal for smaller vessels.

In-Hull: In-hull models are installed inside of the hull. The transducer is suspended in a liquid fulled tank that transmits its sonar directly through a solid, fibreglass hull. They are not suitable for use in steel, aluminium or wooden hull vessels.

Tilted Element: Tilted element transducers are installed flush to the hill. The transducer element is internally tilted at 0, 12 or 20-degree angles to compensate for the hull deadrise.

Through-Hull: Through-hull models require a hole in the hull for mounting. They offer excellent performance when installed with a high performance fairing block. When installed without a high performance fairing, the transducer face can be exposed to aeration and turbulence when the water flow makes an abrupt change of direction.

Selecting a Housing Material:

  • Plastic housing is recommended for fiberglass or metal hulls only. It is not recommended to install a plastic housing in a wooden hull since swelling of the wood can fracture the plastic.
  • Bronze housing is recommended for fiberglass or wooden hulls. Never mount a bronze housing in an aluminum hull because electrolytic corrosion will occur.
  • Stainless Steel housings are recommended for steel or aluminium hulls.
