A SART, or 'Search and Rescue Transponder', is a portable device intended for use in an emergency whilst at sea. They come in two forms; the original type, a RADAR-SART, reacts to the emission of a nearby RADAR, guiding that vessel to its location; the second, an AIS-SART, uses the AIS system to transmit its exact location to vessels within range.
